The city was recommended in an article of reader's tips for a great weekend break this season in the Guardian.

It was described as a "magical" place that is even more special at Christmas by the author, who noted visitors can enjoy ice skating by the river and shopping for gifts in independent boutiques.

"The uphill area with the cathedral and castle dominating the skyline makes for the best backdrop to one of Europe's largest Christmas markets," the contributor continued.

Lincoln is "the perfect city for a winter break" and has plenty of options for excellent food and drink, the reader added.

It should take car hire users approximately two hours to reach the city from Manchester Airport, with the route taking them along the M60, the M67 and the A628 towards Sheffield.
