Those using car hire at Edinburgh Airport might enjoy driving along the coast to Aberdeen, following recent suggestions from one travel guide.
The Lonely Planet observed the city "has a thriving cultural and commercial life", with easy access to various other attractions such as Royal Deeside to the west, sandy beaches to the north and whisky country in Speyside to the northwest.
It recommended visiting the Maritime Museum, which overlooks the harbour and houses a replica of a North Sea oil platform.
The city also has a two-mile beach, with an amusement park that has traditional rides such as dodgems and a log flume.
Another tourist draw is Aberdeen Art Gallery, which features the work of past and present Scottish and English painters including Francis Bacon and Damien Hirst.
The city is less than a three-hour drive from Edinburgh Airport and car hire users need to select the M90 followed by the A90 to reach it.
