Use Glasgow Airport car hire to see how Scotland rocks

Visitors planning to use car hire at Glasgow Airport to help them explore the Highlands may wish to go to the far north and visit Scotland’s first geopark.

The North West Highlands Geopark covers a 2,000 sq km area in the remote region, which is famous for its stunning landscapes and ancient rocks, made from Lewisian Gneiss that dates back three billion years.

It covers areas like Assynt, Coigach and Cape Wrath, where you can see and climb mountains that in some cases rise out of an almost completely flat surrounding landscape, while also viewing rugged coastal scenery.

Visitors can enjoy spotting many kinds of sea bird, with puffins being particularly prominent.

Among the features of the area is the Smoo Cave at Durness, which can only be visited by boat at low tide.

The park starts at Ullapool and this can be reached on the A835 from Inverness, the largest city in the Highlands.

From Glasgow Airport, Inverness can be reached using the A82 via Glencoe, Fort William and the Great Glen.

Such routes offer plenty of mountain and lake scenery, with the A82 passing Loch Lomond – mainland Britain’s largest lake – and the mysterious Loch Ness.
