Those using car rental services at a UK airport might benefit from taking onboard recent advice from one writer.

Nick Trend stated in the Daily Telegraph a flight can be the most uncomfortable part of a holiday, but his top tips on making the journey more comfortable include avoiding peak-time departures.

By steering clear of weekends, Mondays and school holidays, people should have more space, personal service and a nicer experience all round, he explained.

Mr Trend also proposed people spend the night at an airport hotel the evening before they leave to guarantee a good night's sleep, rather than having to leave home in the middle of the night to catch an early-morning flight.

And to beat jet lag, he suggested avoiding alcohol and not going to bed until mid-evening upon arrival.

Another tip car hire users may find useful is to reduce speed when driving on the motorway, as according to charity Brake, this improves congestion and boosts safety.

The travel guide noted Glasgow has bounced back from its dark past by reinventing itself and winning accolades such as the European City of Culture.

"Championing industrial heritage became integral to new-look Glasgow," it observed.

The publication suggested people head to the River Clyde, which has become the city's "focal point", where museums have replaced what were once derelict docklands and visitors can enjoy a trip along the water on the Waverley, the world's last ocean-going paddle steamer.

"Ambling today through a centre of astounding architecture and cool cafe-bars, it's hard to imagine the bad times ever existed," it added.

Glasgow Airport is located close to the city centre and it should take car hire users some 15 minutes to drive, if they select the M8 and exit onto the A198.

The city has launched its Edinburgh Sparkles campaign, highlights of which include a chocolate workshop and a brand new ice rink set against the backdrop of the iconic castle.

Other attractions include the traditional German market and Light Night on November 25th, where there will be street theatre entertainment and an aerial display to illuminate the Christmas tree.

Edinburgh was also recently recommended by the Daily Telegraph as a top destination for festive shopping, noting its "atmospheric cobbled streets come into their own at Christmas", while children will enjoy the funfair from November 26th to January 4th.
