And the rink at Winchester Cathedral is one of his favourites, as he notes it is set against the backdrop of a Gothic building and a large, German-style Christmas market, which runs until December 20th.

The ice skating facility offers mulled wine and strudels and is open until January 3rd, with one-hour sessions costing £9.20 for adults and £7.20 for children.

Winchester is approximately an hour's drive from Heathrow Airport and car hire users can reach it by heading along the M4 and exiting at Junction 4b onto the M25.

From there, motorists should take the M3 at Junction 12, heading towards Southampton.

A route through Stockbridge Down was recommended in the Daily Telegraph by National Trust warden Dylan Everett, who said over 32 species of butterfly have been recorded in the area.

He advised ramblers to look out for historical features along the trail, including grave mounds that date back to the bronze age, a lookout post from World War Two and an iron age hill fort.

"Stockbridge Down boasts an abundance of wildlife and offers visitors spectacular views across Hampshire," Mr Everett commented.

Walkers should bring a pair of binoculars with them to make the most of the lookout points and a pair of boots to navigate the grassy terrain, he suggested.

Drivers can reach the spot from Heathrow Airport in approximately an hour, if they head south along the M25 before turning off at Junction 12 onto the M3.

The attraction is currently bidding to win the Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award 2011 and claims to be full of things to do for children.

Education officer at the museum Amanda Hart said staff have "pulled out all the stops to welcome families" by introducing lots of new hands-on exhibits that aim to encourage people of different ages to engage in discussion.

Children under five now have a special seating section that is equipped with activities, as well as a reading area, she continued.

David Fowles, cabinet lead for museums at Cotswold District Council, added the establishment has introduced "imaginative workshops and other exciting innovations which families have found to be both entertaining and educational".

On October 26th, Anglo-Saxon re-enactment group Wulfheodnas will be taking over the attraction to give a series of presentations on what life was like during this period of history, as well as give youngsters the chance to create a shield and hear about famous warriors.

Event organiser Emma Stuart said the day "will give visitors a taste of Anglo-Saxon life by exploring costume, food, arms and armour".

Members of Wulfheodnas "have a wealth of knowledge and are experts at sharing it in an imaginative way", she added.

Furthermore, those visiting on October 29th can listen to a presentation by Julian Richards – presenter of TV series such as Meet the Ancestors – that will draw on his 30 years of experience as an archaeologist to examine the way attitudes to history are changing.
