Animal lovers taking advantage of car rental at Edinburgh Airport may find Northumberland is an excellent area to drive to.

According to Visit North-East England, the region is a great place for spotting wildlife at this time of year, with plenty of opportunities for catching a glimpse of red squirrels, roe deer and red grouse.

One of the best places to head to is Kielder Water and Forest Park, it suggested, which offers wildlife watching alongside expert guides.

People can take a morning walk with a ranger and watch roe deer in a secluded glade, as well as find out about managing the UK deer population.

The tourism authority also recommended taking the "spectacular 12-mile drive from Kielder Castle to Blakehopeburnhaugh on the A68 at dusk or dawn", as this is one of England's highest roads and offers breathtaking views over Northumberland.

It should take roughly two hours to reach Kielder from Edinburgh Airport, if car hire users select the A720 followed by the A68.
