National Forest to offer family-friendly fun this summer

Families using Gatwick car hire to get to the National Forest this summer will be able to take part in a host of activities and events.

These include the Breath of Fresh Air programme, which runs in August and lets holidaymakers try their hand at orienteering, archery, shelter-building and laser combat in the woods, as well as a number of theatrical performances that include a version of The Wind in the Willows.

Another attraction, Conkers, will also draw kids wanting to engage in insect hunting, pond-dipping and other activities.

"There’s also a new circular bike route, so there’s good facilities for cycling and gentle walking in the forest," explains Carol Rowntree Jones, media relations officer at the National Forest.

"It’s geared to families and easy gentle activities, which suit most people really well."

Visitors can hop on an open-top bus to explore the forest. They can also head to Calke Abbey to see woodland-inspired contemporary art and blow the steam whistle at the Claymills Victorian Pumping Station.

The National Forest is located in the Midlands and spans three counties. Those using car hire to get to the attraction can access it via the M1, M42/A42, A50 and A38.
