Families using car hire at Manchester Airport could find the nearby Peak District offers plenty of wildlife to discover.

Across the region's moorlands are a variety of upland grasses, flowers, mosses and heathers, many of which are rare and fragile, according to learning officer at the Moorland Discovery Centre Rachael Kerr.

She explained the centre has launched a competition inviting people to write a poem inspired by the plants in the area, as they are often overlooked and in need of a way to be celebrated.

"We want people to appreciate the incredible richness and diversity of our native flora by taking a closer look at moorland plants," Ms Kerr continued.

The competition is open to people of all ages and entries can be in the style of any type of poem, with submissions accepted until December 25th.

It should take drivers about an hour to reach the Peak District if they head towards Stockport along the M56 and M60, before selecting the A6.
