London car hire customers to use low-carbon vehicles?

Car hire customers and other drivers in London may want to consider using an electric car, it has been suggested.

Hugh Bladon, spokesperson for the Association of British Drivers (ABD), noted that the vehicles – which have a range of a bout 40 miles before they need to be recharged – would allow you to "whizz around" the capital.

Nonetheless, he doesn’t expect this type of transport to become prevalent throughout the country just yet.

He added: "If eventually somehow the technology allows cars to go further on the battery charge then I suppose it might happen."

And until this happens they will not become universal anytime soon, he remarked.

His comments come after it was announced that the Department of Transport was launching a new incentive that would see leasing companies receive up to £5,000 towards paying for a new ultra-low carbon vehicle, with London, Milton Keynes and the north-east revealed as the first plugged-in places.
