Half of drivers confused over traffic lights

Over half of British drivers do not know the traffic light sequence, according to a new poll.

The survey by Autoquake shows that while 48 per cent of motorists know that the red light comes on after amber, 39 per cent think it is green.

A further seven per cent said a green and amber signal – which does not actually exist – follows amber, while six per cent opted for red and amber.

Drivers in the East Midlands were found to be the most likely to know the right traffic light sequence, while those in Wales were the least knowledgeable.

"In central London, there are 2.4 personal injury accidents per year at traffic signals," Autoquake said.

"With so few drivers knowing the correct traffic light sequence, perhaps this is one of the reasons why."

Car hire customers unsure over the right sequence might want to take care when travelling – failing to comply with traffic light signals is a motoring offence that can appear on driving licences.
