Green car rental to get government boost?

Green car rental could be set to grow in the coming years following the announcement by chancellor Alastair Darling that government incentives will be made available to companies in order to encourage them to have more electric vehicles in their fleets.

The plans were outlined in today’s Pre-Budget Report to the House of Commons and were welcomed by a host of motoring organisations, including the RAC.

Professor Stephen Glaister, the group’s director, indicated he felt it was a positive step that "will help provide a mass market for low-carbon vehicles and encourage a charging infrastructure to be established".

And eco-friendly transport experts TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk went further, with the website’s editor Faye Sunderland calling tax breaks of the kind proposed "very important" with regards to fostering the development of environmentally-friendly vehicles and innovation in this area.

Not all bodies believe the plans to be good, however, with FleetDirectory.co.uk’s Richard Lawton suggesting they are unusable and simply designed to grab headlines.
