Europcar and Aviscar hire customers could find themselves driving electric vehicles (EVs), it has emerged.

The two companies have announced they are to order the Renault version of the product, with Europcar confirming the purchase of 500 EVs – while Avis has singed a similar deal.

Rafael Girona, chief operating officer of Europcar Group, noted that they will be a good accompaniment to the low-carbon automobiles that are already in its fleet.

"The interaction between our network and Renault’s technology will genuinely pave the way for a major advance in mobility solutions," he added.

Mr Girona observed that the company is providing tangible evidence of the commitments it is making to ensure that the carbon emissions are reduced.

It was recently announced that Hertz is to follow suit and will allow its clients to drive EVs from next year.

The Nissan Leaf will have a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a range of 100 miles.
