Go further with car hire at Manchester Airport
Car hire at Manchester Airport is a great way to get around the north of England as a whole and the city in particular, but one trip into the city will offer an encounter with a rather different Manchester.
Manchester, Bolivia is the subject of an exhibition at the Manchester Museum, which is based on the university campus on Oxford Road, just south of the city centre.
It traces the expedition by British explorers Chris Smith and Liz Peel to find the village after seeing it marked on a Russian map in the 1950s.
The displays show various artefacts and photographs of the village, which was established by Mancunian Webster-James when he set up a rubber-smelting plant there in the 1800s.
Visitors to the museum can enjoy a range of permanent artefacts as well, from fossils to Egyptian mummies.
To get to the museum from the airport, take the M56 northwards until it joins the A5103, continuing along this road towards the heart of the city as far as the A6010 (Wilbraham Road).
From here, turn left and continue to the junction with Wilmslow Road (A6010), turning right and continuing up here until it joins Oxford Road (B5117), with the museum located on the left.
