Car hire at Gatwick Airport could take people on a spooky Halloween adventure at Dover Castle in Kent.

The building has been named one of the most haunted English Heritage sites in the country and has a history that stretches back to Roman times.

Emily Burns, head of events at English Heritage, said the organisation's buildings make ideal Halloween visits as they are among England's oldest and most historic castles and "many boast a spooky collection of ghosts".

Sites such as Dover Castle offer a unique experience, as much of what people will see and hear during their haunted tour is based on anecdotal evidence from staff and visitors, she continued.

Ms Burns stated the trips are great for those who want to do something different this Halloween and advised people to call the site ahead of their arrival as the tours are very popular.

Car hire users might see a mysterious woman in red, a Napoleonic drummer or naval officers from the second world war on their visit, all of which have been spotted at Dover Castle in the past.
