Holidaymakers seeking an escape from everyday life might want to head to the Peak District.

The region – which is easily accessible with Manchester Airport car hire – draws visitors in their droves every year thanks to its "jaw-dropping" scenery, according to David Thornton of Visit Peak District and Derbyshire.

More than 36 million people visit the area annually, with the region offering a wide range of accommodation to suit all types of holidaymaker, he explained.

"We’ve got four-star hotels with award-winning rosette restaurants, we’ve got lots of self catering providers who do delightful cottages and farms and little farmhouses in the market towns," Mr Thornton said.

He added that notable events in the Peak District include the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival at Buxton Opera House, the Bakewell Agricultural Show and the Derby Feste, which offers outdoor art and music.

Visitors heading to the Peak District with the help of Manchester Airport car hire can do so via the M1, where drivers should leave at junction 33 and travel through Sheffield city centre to pick up either the A57 or the A625.

It is also possible to avoid Sheffield by exiting the M1 at junction 30 or 29 and picking up the A619 from Chesterfield or the A632.
