Animal lovers looking for an event to take in over the bank holiday weekend may want to use Manchester Airport car hire to visit the Lake District.

The Lakes Aquarium in Windermere is aiming to draw attention to the plight of the endangered monk seal as part of its Bay Watch programme of activities.

It is believed that just 350 to 450 monk seals exist today and visitors to the attraction will be able to find out more about the animal by following a quiz trail and taking in rockpool discovery talks.

They will also be able to make monk seal magnets and raise money via boat racing on the aquarium’s open-topped marine tank.

"We will be highlighting how taking care of creatures is a must if we are to preserve species that are endangered," commented Lakes Aquarium marketing manager Cathy Burrows.

The aquarium is situated on the south shore of Lake Windermere, which also contains a host of other activities and attractions.

Visitors can park their hired car nearby and take a steamboat trip across the lake to various points along its shoreline.
