Charity calls for review of drink-drive limit

London car hire customers could find that the roads become safer, should recommendations to review drink-driving laws be taken on board.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents welcomed police figures showing the number of people arrested for the offence declined over Christmas – compared to a year earlier – despite an increase in breath tests.

Head of road safety at the charity Kevin Clinton highlighted the importance of not getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.

And with a call being made for the legal alcohol limit to be lowered, he said: "The Christmas figures once again show action is needed to change the behaviour of a stubborn minority who continue to drink and drive despite years of education and enforcement campaigns."

The Association of Chief Police Officers statistics indicated that more than 223,000 motorists were tested over the festive period, with around 7,500 arrests being made.
