Sarah Baxter said in an article for the Lonely Planet packing light used to be a handy skill, but with many airlines charging to put bags in the hold, it's now a "necessity".

To save on extra costs, it is possible to travel with just one bag, as long as holidaymakers are clever, she explained.

Ms Baxter advised people to check the bag dimensions allowed by their airline and choose a softer holdall as it will be lighter and more malleable.

Individuals should also plan their packing in advance and don't bring things just in case they are needed, because it will be possible to buy most items upon arrival, she added.
