Car hire customers to use biofuel in the future?
Car hire customers may soon be driving biofuel-powered vehicles, it has been claimed.
The Carbon Trust has created a consortium of British businesses, led by Axion Energy, to pioneer the development of a commercially-viable product, which will turn municipal and wood waste into petrol.
Sadiq Khan, transport minister, stated that the government is committed to ensuring fuel becomes "cleaner, greener and less carbon intensive".
He added: "The challenge is identifying and developing those biofuels which deliver the most environmental benefits."
It is hoped that the plan could eventually save as much as seven million tonnes of carbon – equivalent to the emissions of three million automobiles.
The Carbon Trust is investing £7 million over the next three to four years in the programme.
It was recently suggested that more environmentally-friendly vehicles are now present due to the recession.
Neil Wallis, head of communications for the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, noted that a mixture of legislation and the UK’s car tax polices are behind it.
