Car hire customers to see safer roads?
Car hire customer may see fewer young people on the road if an advisory group’s proposals are introduced, it has emerged.
Mary Williams, Brake’s chief executive, noted that the group had called for the minimum age for driving to be raised to18 for a number of years and wants to see that "enforcement is toughened up to prevent unlicensed, uninsured drivers" as well.
It revealed that a survey it conducted found that 70 per cent of people in the UK supported the introduction of a set period of learning before anyone could do their test – with 66 per cent backing a period of supervision for new drivers.
She added: "We cannot delay anymore in introducing these measures which are proven to work, popularly supported and would prevent more tragedies."
Research recently carried out by Washington State Department for Transport found that one in five people killed in accidents on the road are teenagers.
