Car hire customer and other tourists might like to visit areas of the UK that they have seen on the big screen, it has been claimed.

A spokesman for VisitBritain noted that research completed by the company found that 40 per cent of visitors want to go somewhere they have seen in a movie, such as Sherwood Forest.

He remarked that there "is a buzz" around Nottingham with the upcoming release of Robin Hood, starring Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe.

"Watching a film and wanting to go to that location, it’s very predominant within the American market," the source added.

And he commented that there is likely to be a four per cent rise in spending in 2010, as the tourism sector overtakes retail and manufacturing in the next ten years.

VisitBritain recently launched its own mobile phone application (app) for the iPhone and iTouch.

The free app will allow people to see the place that pictures were shot in Britain.
