Car hire customers in the UK may increasingly come from home, after it was revealed that £4 in every £5 spent by tourists in the country is done so by domestic visitors.

As part of British Tourism Week, a new campaign is being launched that will highlight the benefits of taking a break.

The drive – called British Tourism Benefits Everyone, Everywhere, Every day – notes that the industry employs more than ten per cent of the workforce in 134 constituencies.

It stated that "this is not a seasonal industry; it is a 24 hour, seven-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year industry".

Worth £115 billion to the economy a year, it is the sixth largest sector and supports 2.6 million jobs.

It was recently revealed that car rental customers will have much more green options in the future.

Europcar and Avis observed that they are to buy more electric vehicles from the manufacturer Renault.
