Car hire customers ‘offered tips’ on fuel economy
Keeping to the speed limit is one of the best ways to save money on petrol, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has suggested.
The organisation proposed a number of measures car hire customers and other drivers can take to keep fuel costs down, following the government’s announcement that prices will go up.
According to the IAM, driving at 70mph rather than 80mph can save approximately four pence per mile, while a smooth driving style is thought to reduce consumption by 15 per cent.
"Simple measures such as looking well ahead and slowing down earlier instead of always using the brakes to slow down can make a real difference," said IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger.
Drivers were also advised not to use air conditioning or heated windows unless they are needed.
Earlier this month, the Scottish National Party opposed planned increases in fuel tax, after the AA highlighted the impact rises have had in recent months.
