Car hire customers ‘may have to pay for some roads’

Car hire customers and other motorists may face road pricing in the future, an expert has claimed.

Kevin Delaney, head of road safety at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, noted that it couldl be the only way to deal with the issue of congestion.

However, he stated that the issue with any proposals would be in how it is marketed to the public.

"The sort of problems you are going to have mean you have to make it clear to motorists that there is some benefit in it for them," Mr Delaney said.

It is the only way to manage traffic, he remarked, but there needs to be a commitment that any income generated from the scheme will be put back into transport.

The Confederation of British Industries recently observed that radical changes in the way individuals commute are needed if companies do not want motorways to be jammed any longer.
