Car hire customers ‘could see better road works provisions’

Car hire customers and other drivers may benefit from improved procedures at road works.

The Department for Transport has estimated that there are around 90,000 remedial works carried out each year due to poorly replaced streets, which adds inconvenience to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan has unveiled new measures that he hopes will tackle some of the problems associated with the disruption.

"I have set out plans to increase penalties for late-running works tenfold and proposed strict new rules to ensure that work sites are properly signed and protected," he said.

The government has announced that £100 million of funding will be made available to help councils repair damaged motorways, on top of the £809 million given to them for maintenance in 2010-11.

Stephen Joseph, executive director of the Campaign for Better Transport, recently suggested that introducing smarter motorway planning would represent sensible design, allowing valuable services – such as schools and hospitals – to be close by.
