Car hire customers who are interested in visiting Blackpool will be able to benefit from a better experience, it has been claimed.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced that the coastal town will receive 38.8 million in funding to give it a facelift.

Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens complex will be the two sites that proft from the investment, which the governmnet hopes will "secure the long-term future of the area by rejuvenating tourism".

In 2008-09, the Tower attracted 438,000 visitors and those in power hopes to almost double that figure to 800,000 with the improvements.

Sir Howard Bernstein, chair of ReBlackpool, noted the scheme will help "weld together … other valuable projects … which are designed to make Blackpool an attractive place[in which] to live, visit and invest".

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2011 tourism season.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has over 125 rides, including the Pepsi Max Big One.
